It seems a pattern has emerged for Bethesda in the months leading up to the release of their heavily awaited post-apocalyptic RPG Fallout 4. In true wasteland fashion, Bethesda Softworks has elected to teach incoming players about the various systems in their game by giving brief instructional videos tailored in the style of 1950s infomercials.

“Following total atomic annihilation, the rebuilding of this great nation of ours may fall to you.”

Or in several players cases, the destruction of this great nation

The first video in the S.P.E.C.I.A.L series, Strength, focuses on the importance of equipment load and melee combat. This video focused on the attribute Perception and introduced and reintroduced the popular VATS system (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System). This feature allows players to pause combat to scan targets for weak points and gives a probability-to-hit percentage that allows for a more strategic play style as opposed to real-time combat.

“The higher your Perception, the more accurate you will be. You’ll put Davy Crockett to shame.”

Perception also gives way to furthering your sneaking and stealing abilities in the Wasteland. Leveling up your perception will give you a higher chance of success with stealing items or pickpocketing higher level NPCs.

While this information is not new to veteran Fallout players, these short videos are a great way to introduce these role-playing concepts to new players. Next up is E for Endurance. Are you excited for Fallout 4? Let us know what attributes you will be focusing on in the comments below.
