Helldivers 2 Director Teases New Cape After Review Bombing

Helldivers 2 went through its own Hell that's resulted in an amazing fan cape design.

Helldivers 2 has taken the gaming world by storm, uniting the PC and console communities for a battle against overwhelming odds. However, just as the popularity reached an all-time high, a decision made regarding cross-platform play resulted in backlash that ultimately led to an amazing cape design.

Recently, it was revealed that Sony wanted Helldivers 2 to have a password login that only allowed you to play if you had a PlayStation Network account. While this was standard online play if you had a PlayStation, anyone on Steam became more wary of the decision. Sony’s history of hacks over the years led to major backlash that resulted in the game being review-bombed on Steam.

Typically, review bombing is far from a positive situation, but in this case, it pushed for real change in the relationship between publishers and players like you and me. Before any resolution was reached, those who didn’t have a PSN account were refunded their copy of Helldivers 2. But because of review bombing and fan outcry, the old standards were implemented and the PSN log-in mandate was reversed.

With the PSN login change being reversed, Helldivers 2 has been slowly pulling in more positive reviews. There’s no denying that this change is a big win in the gaming community, and it shows in how some have celebrated. The Accidental Cape Design was created by a player and shown by Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt on X. The cape is a simple blue border with red lines going down the length of the cape to represent the review bombing.

Not only was the cape enjoyed by all, but Pilestedt also mentioned that he was talking about “a good name” for the cape to potentially include it in the game. As of now, there’s no telling if this cape will be in Helldivers 2 let alone as a free item or packed in with other costume items. But one thing is certain: the Accidental Cape Design represents a big win in video games that should never be forgotten.
